Walsall 1 Gillingham 0

GILLINGHAM boss Andy Hessenthaler was left cursing his luck after his side had nothing to show from their trip to Walsall on Saturday.

Hessenthaler was furious his side weren’t awarded a spot kick when Marlon King was hauled down in the box. He said: “We should have had a blatant penalty. We score the penalty - we win the game, simple as that.

“Two or three of their players said it was a blatant penalty. Their crowd could see it as well. Simon Osborn was sitting in the stand with their supporters and one of them said ‘How have we got away with that?’

“The referee had the whistle in his mouth and yet he was waiting for the linesman to make the decision. It’s not as if he was far away from play. He was right there.”

But despite suffering their third defeat in five league games, and scoring only twice in the process, Hessenthaler is confident one win will get his side back on track. He added: “If we stick together and keep applying ourselves the right way we’ll turn the corner."
