Home defeat dents Welling's play-off hopes

Welling 0 Hayes & Yeading 2

Welling's Blue Square South play-off hopes were left hanging by a thread after they lost on Tuesday night.

The defeat was the third game without a win for the Wings - all against their rivals for a place in the play-offs.

A goal in either half from Hayes' 13-goal Josh Scott - the game's outstanding player -proved enough as the Wings wasted numerous chances.

Scott raced onto an 11th-minute through ball to put Hayes ahead. Welling's Moses Ademola had an identical chance five minutes later but poked wide from 15 yards.

Welling keeper Charlie Mitten twice came to his side's rescue to deny Dale Binns and Will Hendry as Hayes' policy of one up front and a flood of support from midfield paid dividends against a square defence.

The game's major talking point came on the stroke of half-time when Hayes' Danny Allen-Page appeared to make a two-footed challenge on Loui Fazackerley. But referee Ashvin Degnarain - who failed to keep up with play throughout - produced only a yellow card.

Welling introduced James Baker early in the second half and he gave them fresh impetus with Tony Sinclair twice heading wide in quick succession.

But Hayes were able to pick the Wings off on the break and Scott missed a good chance to double their lead before he scored his second goal of the night with 10 minutes left to sew the points up.

There was still time for Sinclair to miss another header in front of goal but Welling hardly deserved anything from a game they failed to dominate at any stage.
