CRICKET memorabilia once belonging to the late Kent and MCC batsman and Ted 'Punter' Humphreys achieved record prices at a Nottingham auction.

Scorecards, menus and personal letters all went under the hammer, but the best price of just over £2,000 was received for a pair of gold cufflinks presented to Humphreys by Kent County Cricket Club to commemorate the club's maiden county championship title win in 1906.

A pair of commemorative candlesticks went for around the same sum.

Kent County Cricket Club showed interest in the bidding for several of the Humphreys' lots, but were unsuccessful in buying any of the items.

Raising almost £85,000 in total, the auction included other significant lots including the Australian 'baggy green' cap of Arthur Morris, famous Test batsman of the 1940s and 50s, which was sold for £4,300.

Nottingham-based auctioneer Trevor Vennett-Smith said: "The prices far exceeded expectations and it demonstrates just how much interest there is in sporting memorabilia with good provenance."
