CATHERINE WEARING claimed her first medal at a national competition when she won bronze at the inaugural UK School Games in Glasgow.

She was one of more than 1,000 competitors who took part, competing for the South of England in the 80 metres hurdles.

She finished second in her heat in 11.91, but the final proved eventful for the Eythorne youngster.

Wearing was drawn in lane three alongside favourite Jennifer Taker, but just two hurdles into the race, the North West runner came to grief, as her hurdle smashed into Wearing, and ended her race.

The Kent girl managed to continue, finishing third in 11.75 seconds, behind East of England winner Stephanie Gaynor.

Chancellor Gordon Brown, Cherie Blair, Sir Steve Redgrave, Dame Kelly Holmes and outgoing UK Athletics chief executive Dave Moorcroft were among many famous names who supported the games.
