THE Invicta Dynamos won their second silverware of the season on Thursday, but even player-coach Kev Parrish admitted lifting the Cross Counties Challenge Cup was completely unexpected as Invicta were 6-3 down against higher-league Chelmsford Chieftains from the first leg.
He said: "It was unbelieveable considering their strong line-up, which included three imports. Going into the final period we could see that they were getting a real rollicking off their owners and they changed their lines with Andy Hannah on one and Danny Hughes who scored four times in the first leg on another. But we took it to them, getting the winner was a huge shock but a very welcome one."
The Dynamos and around 30 fans travelled across the water missing top scorer Mike Allaby who was suffering a mild consussion as well as five other regulars, so expectations were not high, while Chelmsford added former Mos defenceman Carl Greenhous and forward Michael Timms to the side that played in the first encounter.
Anthony Leone opened the scoring for Chelmsford at 4:42, but Mos man-of-the-match AJ Smith levelled, taking his time to pick his spot and shoot past former team-mate Carl Ambler in the Chelmsford net.
Ian Rowlands was in superb form and made an excellent windmilling save before denying Hughes, while at the other end Ambler thwarted James Fraser and Peter Carey.
Alex Shaw scoring with a rocket of a shot just 22 seconds after the restart, prompting Chelmsford to put former Dynamos player-coach Hannah up front and he quickly forced a super save from Rowlands.
Andy Smith jinked past the Chelmsford defenders and shot past Ambler, but an incorrect offside call led to Leone scoring his second with Hannah assisting to make it 8-6 on aggregate.
Going into the last period, AJ Smith started the ball rolling scoring a powerplay goal at 47:57 after Sean Easton was sitting an interference penalty and at 50:27 his shot was saved but Stuart Low was there for the rebound.
Scores were now 8-8 on aggregate but Mos hearts were in their mouths when Greenhous somehow managed to saunter through the entire Dynamos defence, but Rowlands saved the day and at 57:27 Andy Smith scored the game's winning goal, again going past the Chieftains like they were standing still and shooting past a shocked Ambler.
