THE great turnaround continues for the Gillingham-based Invicta Dynamos ice hockey team. They served up another double winning-weekend against strong opposition.
After a poor start to the season, the Mos have now won four in a row, including this weekend’s victoriesover high-flying Chelmsford and Swindon.
On Saturday Invicta had quite a tussle with the Chieftains winning 3-2 on the road and yesterday ended the Lynx's seven-game unbeaten run with a 4-1 home win.
Player-coach Carl Greenhous said: “It was a solid weekend and I’m proud of the performances the boys put in and with their work rate. The youngsters did all I asked of them, coming in and doing a job when the first and second lines needed a breather.
“Duane Ward is back to his best, something we need if the team is to be competitive and Matt Van Der Velden had a solid weekend, keeping us in games at times.
“The whole defensive played well, when you only concede three goals in a weekend you can have no complaints.”
Chelmsford were missing the influential Andrew Power and Lachlan Coombe, but iced their new signing Tyrone Miller, the former Romford Raider defenceman of the year.
The Dynamos struck first in a feisty game after Miller and Michael Wales exchanged huge slashes, but only Wales received a penalty.
On the resulting Chelmsford powerplay, Matt Beveridge scored shorthanded from a pass from Sean Clement.
Dynamos scored again soon after the penalty had run out, Phil Chard from Clement, before Jake French made a fantastic interception to thwart a good home chance.
Chieftains got a goal back early in the second from Russell Bishop, but man of the match Van Der Velden was having a storming game keeping 25 shots out in the first two periods.
The Chieftains equalised at 32:01 with a deflected Dan Cabby shot, which only served to galvanize the Mos as Greenhous pinged the pipes and Beveridge treated the fans to something special.
He picked the puck up in his own half and hurtled towards the Chelmsford goal, faking a shot to fool one defender and feinting past another before beating Chris Douglas one on one.
The following night Swindon came to Medway on a role, averaging eight goals a game and boasting their offense was in a hot vein of form. It looked like their words had meaning as they scored after 59 seconds through Mark Richardson.
However, man of the match Ward was in sparkling form and equalised on the Mos’ third power play unassisted at 15.18 stabbing the puck home from a rebound.
Just over a minute later, he scored again a long shot from the blue-line fooling netminder Dan Shea, who from then on had to endure chants of “are you Seaman in disguise.”
The second period began with the Mos in control and on another powerplay.
As Swindon were returning to full-strength, Ward netted his hat-trick, loitering on the far post he flicked the puck into the unguarded corner after Shea had been drawn by Beveridge.
Invicta completed the scoring at 23.18 when Elliott Andrews broke away from the Swindon defence and set up Wales for a shot that arched over the Shea’s head.
