Ice men 'still have everything to play for'

THE Medway-based Invicta Dynamos ice hockey team go into a crucial play-off weekend with captain Phil Chard insisting there is still everything to play for.

The Dynamos only took one point from their opening two games last weekend, losing 6-2 at Milton Keynes Lightning and drawing 5-5 with Slough Jets.

But Isle of Wight’s surprise double victory over Milton Keynes and Slough has thrown the group wide open. It means that if the Dynamos have a successful weekend at Slough on Saturday and against Milton Keynes at the Ice Bowl on Sunday, they could put themselves in a commanding position.

Despite their two opponents finishing above them in the English Premier League, Chard remains confident.

He said: “Everyone pretty much expected Milton Keynes to run away with the group but that has not happened. We have taken five points out of eight at Slough and we are looking to do them at their place.

“No-one has blown us away in our own building and we’ve tied twice with Milton Keynes there so we want to take that one step further and beat them. We are also capable of going to the Isle of Wight the following weekend and winning. We had to do that last year and won there 3-2.”

Chard hopes the home crowd will play a big part in the game against Milton Keynes. He stressed: “I don’t think the fans realise how much they help us because when it is loud in our rink it is a great place to play.

“There wasn’t the biggest crowd against Slough on Sunday but when we got back to 5-5 they were making loads of noise.”

The Dynamos will have a full strength roster for the weekend with Elliot Andrews returning to the fold. Andrews injured his nose against Milton Keynes on Saturday and missed the Slough game, but is expected to play with a full-face mask.
