Injury-hit Gills set to call on Taylor

FANS' favourite Robert Taylor could be set for a return to action against Norwich at Priestfield as Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler looks to increase his team's firepower. Taylor could make his first appearance since his loan move from Wolves, but he is likely to start on the bench.

Gillingham have been somewhat shy in front of goal this season, scoring only 17 goals in 10 league games, the majority of which have come from Iffy Onuora and Marlon King.

But with Onuora out with a knee injury, Hessenthaler is hoping the goals will come from elsewhere. Taylor may provide the answer.

King scored 15 league goals in 38 games last season having signed from Barnet and has weighed in with another eight so far this term. Hessenthaler said: “There is just no end product at the moment. We had a lot of the ball against Southampton in the Worthington Cup but struggled in the final third.

“We have got to start sharing the goals because I don't want to put too much pressure on a young lad. We all know what Bob is capable of, and if over the next three months we can work hard and get him back to what he was, then both the club and the player will benefit.”

Ty Gooden is still struggling with a groin strain and changes will have to be made.

Marcus Browning is expected to come back into midfield for Hessenthaler but the manager will have a big decision to make as to who partners Marlon King up front.

Hessenthaler said: “Having picked up injuries against Southampton, we need everybody in the squad to be available.

“It's not just about 11 players. Marcus was a little bit disappointed to be left out, but he will get his chance again on Saturday.

"Mark Saunders has been pressing for a chance and I thought he came in and did very well on Tuesday. Guy Butters came back for Barry Ashby and with Adrian Pennock also returning, I thought the defensive unit worked very well.”
