Injury setback for Corbett

MOVES to bring former favourite Jim Corbett back to Gillingham from Blackburn have fallen through after the young winger suffered another injury setback with a hamstring strain.

Gills player-manager Andy Hessenthaler originally wanted to assess Corbett's fitness during the club's pre-season preparations before deciding whether to take him on loan after manager Graeme Souness made him available.

Corbett, 21, has two years of his Blackburn contract remaining and looks likely to see it out in the reserves at Ewood Park unless he can prove his fitness and gets a move.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Gillingham's Barry Ashby is close to signing a long-term contract while the club is in receipt of the terms defender Roland Edge is seeking to sign a new deal.

Edge is presently playing for the club on a week to week basis.
