Ipoua hopes for Cameroon call-up

GILLINGHAM striker Guy Ipoua has admitted his aspirations of breaking into the international scene before the end of the season. Cameroon-born Ipoua, 25, has dual Cameroon and French nationality but it won't be the World and European Champions' door he'll be knocking on.

Instead the fast and skilful forward who signed for the Gills from Scunthorpe for a cut price £25,000 in March is dreaming of pulling on the green, red and yellow of the Indomitable Lions.

Ipoua longs to follow in his brother Samuel's footsteps and feature for his country as Samuel did in the 1998 World Cup.

If he realises his aim, the Gills' striker could himself be going to the World Cup after Cameroon qualified top of their group. They are one of five African nations that will be bringing colour and flair to the finals in Japan and South Korea next summer.

He said: "For this season it would be great to get into the Cameroon squad but my mind is very much concentrated on Gillingham. Before I think about anything else I want to do well for the club because it's the most important day-to-day job. I want to look forward and start giving the manager more of a headache when it comes to picking the front two.

"That's my aim and after that I can take time to start thinking about playing for my country."

Ipoua has scored two goals this season and wants to become a regular in the Gills starting line-up. Player manager Andy Hessenthaler will need his whole squad fit in the coming weeks as Gillingham face a nightmare backlog with five games in 12 days in November because of rearranged games.

The exhausting fixture list sees them play Watford on the 18th, Crystal Palace on the 21st, Millwall away on the 24th, Stockport away three days later with Birmingham due at Priestfield on the 30th.

The altered fixture list means Saturday home games will be few and far between with the game against Walsall on October 27 the last one for nearly two months before Sheffield Wednesday arrive at Priestfield on December 15.
