GILLINGHAM manager Ronnie Jepson had says he understands the decision to send striker Darren Byfield off during the defeat at Swindon.

It was the Gills top scorer's second dismissal of the season after also seeing red against Scunthopre in August and he will now miss the next four matches.

Jepson was considering an appeal over Byfield’s dismissal for a challenge on Swindon keeper Rhys Evans, but after seeing the video of the incident he felt the matter was best left alone.

He said: "It was reckless, it wasn’t violent. Some referees would have deemed it a yellow card, others a red, but I understand where the referees are coming from because they have to follow certain procedures.

"Darren hasn’t got a bad bone in his body. He’s not that type of physical player but we’d struggle on an appeal and we’ll accept the four-game ban.

"We’re going to miss him but we’ll have to get on with it."
