Kent Spitfires v Derbyshire Phantoms
It was a case of ‘after the Lord’s mare show’ for Kent as they bounced back from Saturday’s five-wicket Friends Provident Trophy Final defeat against Essex to dish out a nine-wicket thrashing to Derbyshire.
Monday’s entire NatWest Pro40 League game was over inside 135 minutes as Kent skittled out the frighteningly inept Phantoms for 60 and then knocked off the runs in 37 minutes for the loss of one wicket after 9.4 overs to secure their third win in four starts.
Spitfires’ openers Joe Denly and Rob Key raced to 49 inside eight overs of the home reply with Key cracking 20, although he was dropped by Jake Needham on nought when attempting a paddle over short fine leg off the bowling of Charl Langeveldt.
Needham made up for that blunder by taking a stunning one-handed, overhead catch at mid-off from the bowling of Rikki Clarke but Martin van Jaarsveld (9) joined Denly (28) to see Kent over the finish line with 30.2 overs to spare.
Robbie Joseph’s best ever Pro40 League bowling figures of 5-13 helped skittle out the Phantoms inside 22.4 action packed overs – their lowest ever score in league competition.
Only two Derbyshire batsmen made it into double figures as Joseph, bowling up the St Lawrence slope, proved too hot for them to handle after the visitors had won the toss and elected to bat.
Amjad Khan started the rot when he plucked out the middle stump of new Phantoms’ skipper Chris Rodgers (0) with only the sixth ball of the innings.
Joseph then struck with his fourth ball of the day by rearranging Greg Smith’s stumps to make it 6-2.
The visitors stumbled on to 28 before losing four more wickets on the same scoreline in the space of 13 balls.
Rikki Clarke (6) drove loosely at Joseph to be bowled by Joseph who then snared Dominic Telo (0) leg before.
Tom New survived the hat-trick ball but, in the next over, Hinds (14) chopped on to his off stump when attempting a back-foot force against Ryan McLaren and, with the score still on 28, New pushed at a lifting ball from Joseph to be superbly caught one-handed at slip by Justin Kemp.
The rout continued in Joseph’s next over when Graham Wagg (6) mistimed a drive to Darren Stevens at cover as Joseph bagged 4-2 in 18 balls.
Kent remained on top as Needham (7) played inside a James Tredwell arm ball to lose off stump then, next ball up, Langeveldt ran himself out for a single when chancing a second run to van Jaarsveld at deep cover.
The innings was complete with 97 minutes when top-scorer Clare (18) edged Amjad Khan to keeper Geraint Jones.
Khan took 2-23, McLaren and Tredwell one apiece but Joseph was the undoubted star.
