LEADING scorer Danny Kedwell scored an 85th-minute winner to send Welling up to third in Conference South on Wednesday night.

With his back to goal, Kedwell produced a brilliant finish over the head of stranded City keeper Danny Naisbitt to settle a well-contested match.

Both sides had chances to win, without ever dominating for long periods, but Kedwell's 25th goal of the season secured a third successive 1-0 victory for Welling.

Although Steve Perkins volleyed over early on, it was the visitors who settled quickest and Jamie Turner had to be alert to deny Lee Chaffey before he brilliantly turned Michael Gash's 31st-minute shot onto the crossbar.

Welling, who replaced the returning Steve Harper with Hector Mackie before half-time, had their best opening on 41 minutes but Ben Lewis nodded Ellis Green's corner wide at the near post.

The Wings were denied a blatant penalty on 58 minutes when Lewis was felled in the area but the referee waved play on.

The game came to life with 15 minutes left when City keeper Naisbitt reacted to Lewis' late challenge. The Wings defender and City's Glen Fluff both got yellow cards but Naisbitt's retaliation somehow went unpunished.

Kedwell was denied by Naisbitt with six minutes left but within a minute he had turned the tables to give Welling an excellent chance of making the play-offs.

The Wings are away to champions-elect Histon this Saturday.
