Gills interim boss Peter Taylor admits playing Danny Kedwell at centre-half from the off is an option.

Gillingham’s leading scorer, with six goals in his last six appearances, played the final 10 minutes alongside Adam Barrett in central defence against Carlisle on Saturday following Leon Legge’s dismissal.

An impressive performance from Kedwell has given Taylor something to think about, as he looks for a replacement in defence, ahead of Legge’s one-match suspension against Brackley Town in the FA Cup first round on Saturday.

Asked if Kedwell could fill the void, Taylor said: “Absolutely. I would consider him for centre-half and we will have to see.

“When you’ve got Adebayo Akinfenwa, who you can push upfront, then it’s something that I would consider. He looked fine, he looked comfortable there.”

Kedwell hit the winner at the weekend – his eighth of the season – and Taylor feels there is even more that the striker can produce.

He said: “He has scored in every game (of the interim period) and I am pleased for him. He work hard and he is going to get better as a player.”

And asked if he could perform higher than League 1, Taylor said: “It is down to him. He can still get a little more mobile but he can hold the ball, he is strong, he is good in the air and can play centre-half as well, so that’s handy.”
