Kedwell spot-kick defeats title chasers

PENALTY: Danny Kedwell
PENALTY: Danny Kedwell

Welling United 1 - 0 Farnborough

DANNY KEDWELL'S first-half penalty ensured there was no FA Cup hangover for Welling on Tuesday night.

The Wings saw off title challengers Farnborough at Park View Road but dropped down one place in the table to third on goal difference.

Wings boss Adrian Pennock said: "We changed our shape and the players did exactly what they were asked to do. We deserved the win, we worked hard and full credit to the players for the effort and determination that they showed."

Showing no sign of tiredness after a gruelling 90 minutes at Huddersfield two days earlier, Welling started brightly and Kedwell twice went close in the first seven minutes.

Visiting keeper Kevin Scriven then had to backpedal to tip Leon Solomon's cross over before Rob Owen just failed to connect with another Solomon centre.

Welling were awarded a penalty on 29 minutes when the assistant referee flagged that Owen's cross had been handled and Kedwell confidently struck home the spot-kick Matt Carruthers followed up to smash the loose ball into the net again but only managed to hit the face of Scriven, who promptly pushed Carruthers to the ground. After a lengthy delay, both players were shown a red card by the referee.

Substitute keeper Craig Green did well to save from Owen before Chris Moore's close-range header was somehow cleared off the line.

Farnborough forced Welling keeper Jamie Turner into serious action five minutes after the break but, despite having the wind and slope in their favour, they failed to create many clear-cut chances.

Carl Gibbs headed straight at Turner with 10 minutes left while Che Stadhart wasted a chance to wrap the game up late on after good work by substitute Matt Bodkin.

Welling held on for more than four minutes of stoppage time and face an equally testing match on Saturday away to Weymouth.
