LEICESTERSHIRE are giving Kent’s second string pace bowler David Stiff a three-day trial with a view to him making a possible loan move to Grace Road.

The 21-year-old Dewsbury-born player has not made a championship start for Kent in the last two seasons and has found his first team opportunities severely limited through injury and lack of form since signing from Yorkshire in 2003.

A former England Under-17 and Under-17 bowler, he played for a Kent development squad at Cambridge University a fortnight ago but sent down 11 no balls and handful of wides in an unimpressive spell.

Leicestershire’s senior coach Tim Boon, who is actively looking to strengthen the club’s seam department, said: “I know David from his time with England Under-19s and feel there is a lot of potential there.

“I will look at him this week and decide then whether to bring him here on loan.”

Stiff was named in the Leicestershire 2nd XI squad to take on Surrey in a three-day game at Uppingham School from Wednesday.

Kent’s director of coaching Graham Ford said: “The whole aim of this is to try and get David playing more cricket.”
