KENT supporters and players alike will await the outcome of last Monday night’s end-of-season meeting of Kent's Cricket Committee at St Lawrence with eager anticipation.
The club’s retained list of contracted players is normally published the week after the meeting, though this season there are so few contractual issues left to resolve that the club will have little or no need to issue a ‘list’.
All-rounders Ryan McLaren and James Tredwell have received new deals, as has experienced seamer Simon Cook, leaving pace bowlers Martin Saggers and Robbie Joseph, as well as left-arm spinner, Min Patel, as the only senior players to be somewhat in limbo.
In a move to see off interest from Essex, Kent have made Saggers the offer of a new two-year deal, potentially seeing him through to a benefit season.
Their offer seems almost certain to include fitness clauses and targets for the 35-year-old to reach every close season but, if personal terms can be agreed, the contract should lead to Saggers seeing out his playing career with Kent.
However, with a lucrative three-year deal already on the table from Essex coach Paul Grayson, Saggers seems likely to take a few days before committing pen to paper.
As for Antigua-born pace bowler Joseph, who has been out of the side since May with a pelvic problem.
Veteran spinner Patel will also decide his future having missed all but the first of Kent’s championship matches this season with an elbow tendon injury.
