KENT took the safety first policy and ensured their losing streak will at least come to an end by batting Sussex out of the match in Canterbury.

Deciding not to enforce the follow-on, Kent extended their overall lead in the match from 195 to 514 in reaching 319 for seven declared.

Skipper David Fulton declared once Matthew Walker hit successive boundaries to reach his third century of the summer from 146-balls – the first time the left-hander has scored two tons in a match.

Sussex will have 17 overs today and 96 on the final day in which to chase 515, but odds are firmly on the draw.

With Amjad Khan (shin) and Min Patel (calf) hampered by injury, David Fulton is left with a bare-bones and hugely inexperienced bowling attack for the final day of the game – another reason for batting on well into the third day of four.

When bad light stopped Thursday’s play, Sussex had reached 21 without loss after eight overs.
