KENT’S Geraint Jones and Rob Key have been named in England’s long-list 30-man squad to contest this autumn’s ICC Champions Trophy event in England.
In naming the party for the competition which starts on September 10, chairman of selectors, David Graveney, said: “Our ultimate goal is to build a side for the 2007 World Cup and the make-up of this squad gives a good indication as to the type of team we are looking to develop and the particular roles we are looking to fill within it.
“There are 10 players in this provisional squad who have not yet played one-day international cricket and we will continue to experiment with new players as we seek the right blend between experience and youth.
“Choosing 30 players is a far harder task than picking 14 and I would stress that this is by no means a definitive or exhaustive list.”
In a possible reference to Kent’s Martin Saggers, who has been overlooked in the 30, Graveney added: “A number of seam bowling options were considered and those who are not on the list should not be unduly disheartened about their international prospects.
“As we look ahead to the composition of the winter tour parties, we will continue to closely monitor individual performances in all the domestic one-day competitions and canvass opinion within the game from coaches and captains about the merits of individual players.”
The squad, which will be narrowed down to a final list of 14 names by August 10, contains all 14 members of England’s NatWest Series squad plus 10 uncapped players at one-day international level: Ian Bell and Mark Wagh (Warwickshire), Richard Dawson (Yorkshire), Alex Gidman and Jonathan Lewis, (Gloucestershire), Graham Napier (Essex), Michael Powell, Simon Jones and Alex Wharf (Glamorgan) and Chris Tremlett (Hampshire).
