Key remains upbeat despite bad light points blow

Phlegmatic Kent skipper Rob Key remained at his laid-back best despite the frustration of missing out on a precious batting bonus point on the final afternoon of their rain-ruined championship clash with Surrey.

The county captain and opening bat was left stranded on 76 not out and with his side on 160-1 from only 21.1 overs, and only 40 runs shy of a batting point when bad light ended the game 12 overs short of its scheduled close on Sunday evening.

Afterwards Key said: "Going off for bad light with us needing another 40 for a point sort of summed up the week. Rain everywhere and if it wasn't raining the light was bad, so when you look back over the four days that was almost an inevitable end.

"It was pleasing personally to go out and play with a bit of freedom and get a few runs, I've had a tough time with the bat in the past few weeks, so it was good to get out there and bat like that with Joe, who really looks to be in top form.

"It was one of those games when we toiled away without much luck really, though I have to say we didn't catch our catches when we bowled, but it was good to finish like that on an up note because it showed what might have been had we had four decent days of weather."

Kent's players now enjoy their first five-day break of the season before next Saturday's NatWest Pro40 League Division 2 title showdown with Essex in Canterbury.

The game at St Lawrence is now to be televised live on Sky Sports.
