GOALKEEPER Dean Kiely’s season to remember climaxed as he was named as Charlton’s Players’ Player of the Year.
Kiely, already the supporters’ choice, received the award at the club’s annual end-of-season dinner at London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel which went with an additional swing as players, management and supporters celebrated the club’s highest ever Premiership finish.
Kiely received his award from Charlton plc chairman Richard Murray and praised his team-mates for what he described as a “fantastic season.”
The third goal of Kevin Lisbie’s hat-trick against Liverpool on September 28 won Goal of the Season.
Lisbie, who started his run well within his own half, said: “That was easily the best goal of my career. Certainly one to remember.”
Ten goals were short-listed for the award. Among them one from former midfielder Scott Parker against Southampton, which was roundly booed by many diners.
Michael Turner won the Young Player of the Year, beating off the challenge of five other candidates.
He said: “My ambition next season is to play first-team football and maybe I will have to go out on loan to do that.”
Long-serving club director Derek Ufton won a standing ovation when he received a special achievement award. He reminded everyone how far the club had come since returning to The Valley in 1992.
He said: “Finishing seventh in the Premier League would have been beyond our wildest dreams not so long ago. Now we just want to keep going.”
