Striker Ross Lafayette has stunned Conference Premier Welling by agreeing to join League 2 Luton Town.

The forward, who scored 16 league goals last season, had agreed a new one-year deal at Park View Road.

But the Wings announced on Monday that the striker is expected to join Luton later this week. He scored in Luton's 2-1 victory at Welling in April and twice in the final game of last season, a 4-3 home win over Southport.

Welling boss Jamie Day refused to be drawn on Lafayette's exit but is believed to have three possible alternatives on his wishlist.

"We've got to replace 16 goals in the team," said Day. "We like to get on and do our business early and I've got some targets that I'm speaking to.

"But I'm not going to rush in and just sign anyone, if the right player becomes available then I will bring them to Welling."

Lafayette scored 39 goals in 90 appearances for Welling over a two-year period.

The Wings also revealed that they had made an offer for a different striker since Lafayette's decision which would have made that player the highest-paid in the club's history. However, that forward has since joined a Conference South club for more money.
