Lashings set for clash of Titans

SERIOUS WAR: David Folb
SERIOUS WAR: David Folb

LASHINGS all stars aim to trounce Kent in their own back garden on Sunday when the two sides clash in the third Titans of Kent Challenge match.

This season's challenge will be played under Twenty20 rules, a move that meets with the approval of Lashings supremo David Folb, whose side helped the England and Wales Board fine-tune the format last year.

"The whole Twenty20 experience has been brilliant this summer, but I'm not at all surprised by the way it's taken off," said Folb ahead of Sunday's game.

"We were very proud when the ECB asked us to play Gloucestershire in Bristol last season as a Twenty20 try-out and it worked really well.

"It's a great game to play and enjoying to watch and you have to give credit to cricket officials for eventually trying something new.

"My guys love playing Twenty20, especially the West Indians, because they really don't have to change their style much -- they play that way anyway!"

The Lashings chairman has boosted his squad for the game with the late signing of South African all-rounder Lance Klusener and West Indies fast bowling legend Curtly Ambrose.

"We're coming down to St Lawrence for a serious war," added Mr Folb.

"There's no messing around this time as far as we're concerned. Kent were lucky to win it last year and only did so because the weather was on their side, but we aim to take the trophy home this time around."

Looking forward to the Titans' clash, Kent's market manager Jon Fordham, said: "I know we'll be in competition with the Open Golf down in Sandwich, but Twenty20 has been a phenomenal success this season and after good advance ticket sales were hoping for a crowd approaching 2,500.

"We know David Folb has strengthened his squad for the game and we too will be putting out a string side.

"For all David's words he appears to forget that Kent actually beat Lashings last season, and they only won the trophy the first year because we felt sorry for them -- in reality the game was a tie!"

A band, free face painting and a Kent Cricket Board kids skills competition to win free match tickets will be amongst the attractions when the gates open at St Lawrence at 11am.

The match gets underway at 2pm and admission for members £5 adults and £3 concessions, with prices doubled for non-members.

Lashings will pick from the following squad: Stuart Williams, Sherwin Campbell, Craig McMillan, Mark Waugh, Richie Richardson, Chris Harris, Junior Murray, Lance Klusener, Franklin Rose, Curtly Ambrose, Martin McCague.
