Welling United 1 – 1 Cambridge City
STRIKER Danny Kedwell netted an 89th-minute equaliser to rescue a point for Welling against promotion-chasing Cambridge City.
The Wings looked to be heading for their second home defeat of the season but Kedwell drilled home from 12 yards after substitute Che Stadhart returned a right wing corner.
Two evenly matched sides played out an entertaining game in front of Park View Road’s biggest crowd of the season.
There was no quarter given and goalscoring chances were at a premium in the first half.
Both teams went close immediately after the restart, James Pinnock for Welling and Paul Booth for the visitors.
Cambridge goalkeeper Danny Naisbitt was lucky not to be sent off just after the hour when he recklessly clattered into Kedwell outside his penalty area. Referee S. Fay only produced a yellow card when the visitors must have feared the worst.
Cambridge took advantage to go ahead on 71 minutes when Booth set up Craig Dobson to score from close range, but with Stadhart and Kedwell both going close Welling’s late pressure was finally rewarded.
