Lasting memorial to Voice of Football

GILLINGHAM are to create a lasting memorial to the late Brian Moore by naming the redeveloped Town End after him.

Chairman Paul Scally made the announcement before the Worthington Cup tie against Millwall as he said a few words about the former commentator.

Mr Scally said the new Brian Moore Stand would be built in the next few years to replace the open Town End when plans are put into action.

Mr Moore, a former director at the club, died on September 1 in Farnborough Hospital and will be remembered by millions as the voice of football.

The news was met with rapturous applause by the Priestfield crowd before a minute's silence was impeccably observed to remember Brian and the victims of the atrocities in America on Tuesday.

Mr Scally said that the club were "united in grief" and went on to pay tribute to Mr Moore in his programme notes.

Describing him as a "great mentor", Mr Scally said: "He loved our club and I remember when our fans gave him a standing ovation as he climbed to his seat in the Rainham End with me during the Medway Stand construction. He will be missed by us all, but never forgotten."
