Welling United 3 AFC Hornchurch 1
TWO late goals ensured Welling finally overcame AFC Hornchurch in their FA Cup third qualifying round tie on Wednesday night.
The Wings led for most of the evening but it seemed destined that the tie would go to extra-time after they threw away their one-goal lead in the final 15 minutes.
But Che Stadhart found his goalscoring boots when Welling needed it most and Des Boateng completed the scoring with a stoppage time stunner.
Welling led as early as the sixth minute when Martin Carthy's powerful header from Jamie Day's corner left Dale Brightley with no chance.
The Wings looked unsure in defence but Kris Lee wasted three openings as the Ryman League Division 1 North visitors proved a handful for the home side.
Hornchurch continued to press Welling back after the break but keeper Jamie Turner did not have a serious save to make. The impressive Ben Lewis denied Lee with a fine block tackle four minutes after the break and Welling were forced to go on the counter attack.
Danny Kedwell, who was watched by Brentford boss Leroy Rosenior, had an off-day in front of goal, twice failing to convert one on one chances.
It meant, as in the first game, that a one-goal lead was not enough and so it proved when John Guest's foolish challenge gave away a penalty and Mark Janney converted from the spot after 76 minutes.
Welling were back in front two minutes later when Matt Bodkin's left-wing cross was volleyed home by Stadhart and the Wings' progress was sealed a minute into injury time when Boateng scored from 20 yards.
The Wings are at home to Clevedon in the fourth qualifying round on Saturday October 28.
