CHARLTON missed the chance to go top of the Championship after conceding an 85th minute equaliser at Coventry on Saturday.

Coventry striker Michael Mifsud, whose two goals despatched Manchester United from the Carling Cup on Wednesday, fired in a low angled drive to deny the Addicks a second away win in the league.

"I would have taken the draw before hand but I was disappointed with our defending in the second half," said manager Alan Pardew.

"I shall expect a lot better at Hull on Tuesday. Having said that I thought we were denied a stonewall penalty when Luke Varney was brought down by Michael Turner.

"If the referee had awarded a penalty he would have had to send off Turner. I didn't think he made the right descision."

Lloyd Sam's first league goal of the season gave Charlton the tonic of a 16th minute lead from Danny Mills' astute pass.

Charlton rode their luck when Mifsud's shot struck the inside of a post after 32 minutes.

Charlton's defending threatened to gift Coventry an early second half equaliser but they failed to exploit a series of errors before Mifsud earned them a point they deserved.
