Welling United 2 Tamworth 1

TWO goals in the final 13 minutes sent Welling through to the third round of the FA Trophy on Tuesday night.

The Wings came from behind to knock out Nationwide Conference Tamworth in their second round replay with goals courtesy of skipper Jamie Day and substitute Andrew Sam.

Che Stadhart blazed over in the first 30 seconds as Welling started brightly but it was the visitors who impressed more with James Price's free-kick coming back off the woodwork.

Tamworth took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Jake Edwards' long-range shot seemed to bobble over keeper Paul Hyde.

Welling lacked any creativity and struggled to create clear-cut chances. But the introduction of Sam with 20 minutes left sparked them into life.

The striker combined well with Stadhart and Mark Goodfellow as they set up Day to drive home a deflected equaliser with 13 minutes left.

Although Tamworth hit the bar again, this time through Matt Williams, there was only going to be one winner as Welling pressed forward.

The decisive goal came on 83 minutes when Day's corner was headed down by Steve Perkins and Sam was on hand to nod home from close range.

"It's a great feeling to come from behind and go through," said Sam. "The manager told me to go on and be more aggressive and I'm pleased that I got my goal.

"We've got a great spirit in the squad, the players all work hard for each other and we never give up - we proved that again."

The game was played in front of a crowd of 331 at Gravesend's Stonebridge Road.
