GILLINGHAM conceded a late goal for the second home game in succession as they drew 1-1 with lowly Sheffield Wednesday at Priestfield (Steve Jackson writes).

After losing 1-0 against Reading the previous weekend, the Gills were determined to bounce back to form, and they got off to a good start when they took the lead midway through the opening period.

Tommy Johnson, who played on loan at Wednesday last season, netted the strike from 10 yards out with an emphatic finish following a good move from the home side.

In a game of few chances, Marlon King went close on a couple of occasions for Gillingham either side of half time, but the hosts looked set to take the points when Sheffield's Gerald Sibon missed the target twice in the closing stages.

By then Gills player-boss Andy Hessenthaler had been sent off for two yellow card offences, and perhaps his inspirational qualities were missing in stoppage time when substitute Leon Knight slammed in the equaliser.
