Late revival preserves Gate's away-day record

MARGATE struck twice in the final 19 minutes to preserve their unbeaten away record in the Nationwide Conference with a high-scoring draw at Forest Green Rovers. Leon Braithwaite kick-started the revival with a 71st minute penalty and Jay Saunders then popped up with a superb equaliser.

The match produced three spot kicks in total, with Forest Green being awarded two in as many minutes in the first half after the Gate had gone aheadon 18 minutes through Mark Munday. A foul by Jay Saunders on Martin Foster gave Alex Meechan the chance to equalise from the spot in the 24th minute and 90 secondslater Foster won another penalty after a push by Jon Barodman.

This time Meechan's shot was saved by Gate keeper Lee Turner but Simon Travis reac ted quickest to the loose ball to score from the follow-up.

Margate fell further behind on 59 minutes when Tony Daley's corner was flicked on by Lee Howey and Meechan headed home. But they were thrown a lifeline in the 71st minute when a shot from substitute Phil Collins was handled by Howey and Braithwaite converted the penalty for his 10th goal of the campaign.

The comeback was completed with 10 minutes remaining when Saunders collected possession 25 yards out, beat two defenders and unleashed a firece shot into the top corner.
