THE top Sunday football side on Sheppey, Sheerness East, have folded, it has been revealed.
East, who play in the Medway Today Sunday League Senior Section, could only field five players for their last game against Quested.
It was the final straw for player-manager Paul Colenutt who said: “I’ve got about 20 players but on some occasions only six or seven were getting up in the morning to play.
“Most weeks it was a real struggle to get a team together so we decided to give it a miss. Our priority is the Saturday team.
“I’ve got an injury which needs operating on soon so I wouldn’t have been able to play for the side. I would have preferred to manage the team and not play but that wasn’t possible.”
East have had their share of success in the league, winning the senior section in 1987-88 and the League Cup five seasons later.
Colenutt added: “It’s a shame because there are a number of players who have been at the club for many years but we just couldn’t carry on like this."
