THREE members of the same footballing family will be chasing glory in Kent finals as the season reaches its climax.
Brothers Aiden and Andy Kay both play for Whitstable-based Sunday League side Falcons, who are through in the Kent Junior Cup final, while sister Lesley is a member of the Gillingham Ladies team who have progressed to the same stage in the women’s county cup.
Proud parents Gary and Pamela, of Bridgefield Road, Tankerton, regularly watch the two boys play football in the morning and Lesley in the afternoon.
The Women’s Kent Cup final between Gillingham and Charlton will be at Chatham on Tuesday, April 29, with Falcons meeting Woodcombe, from Sittingbourne, in their final on Sunday, May 4. The venue has still to be confirmed.
Father Gary said: “If anything Lesley’s the better player. It’s just a shame they can’t all play in the same team. The boys are quite competitive but it’s a friendly rivalry and they are lucky to play in a very good team, all of whom work hard for each other.
“The club’s had brilliant season because 18 months ago they were struggling to stay in Division 1.”
Both boys are free-scoring midfielders and it was Andy’s 50th-minute header against Gardeners Arms, from Tonbridge, on Sunday which took Falcons through to the final for the first time.
Twenty-four-year old Andy has been with Falcons for five years and older brother Aiden, 27 on April 13, for three. Both used to play youth football for Millstrood Rovers.
Falcons are having an outstanding campaign in the Macdonald Mailing Herne Bay and Whitstable League.
Unbeaten since the back end of last season they are chasing promotion to the Premier Division and meet Woodmans Hall in the semi-finals of their divisional knock-out competition, the Tommy Coulter Memorial Cup. They are also through to the last eight of the league’s Challenge Cup.
Lesley, 22, was a member of the Whitstable Ladies team which won the Kent Suburban League last season but she moved to Gillingham to play at a higher level.
The Gills sit mid-table in the SE Combination League - just one below the National League - and Lesley’s goal tally for the season is into double figures.
A talented sporting all-rounder she also plays basketball and hockey, and has just helped Herne Bay Hockey Club’s ladies win the Women’s Kent League Division 1 title.
She has played this season primarily as a goalkeeper although she can also play on field and as a youngster twice helped Bay’s girls win the under-13 mini hockey national title.
