Luckless Wings beaten at home

Welling 1 Bishop's Stortford 3

Ten-man Welling dropped precious points in their quest for Blue Square South promotion on Saturday against struggling Bishop's Stortford.

The Wings, who led at the break, looked on course for a maximum return but the sending off of defender Tony Sinclair early in the second half proved the turining point of a miserable afternoon.

The Wings were in front after just nine minutes when Delando Smith fed in Ryan Johnson and he slotted past keeper Nicky Eyre for his first goal for the club.

Chances were few and far between thereafter, although Lee Protheroe had to block one goal-bound effort and keeper Clark Masters saved well from Duane Jackman.

The game changed eight minutes into the second half when Sinclair was caught out by Jackman. Referee Lee Venamore pointed to the spot and felt Protheroe was not back to cover deeming Sinclair the last man.

With the Wings defender back in the dressing room, Danny Green stepped up to equalise from the penalty spot.

Within two minutes Orlando Smith saw his right-foot shot come back off the woodwork but it was going to be a familiar story late on.

Stortford went ahead with 14 minutes to go when Masters somehow stayed rooted to his line and allowed substitute Sam Higgins to latch onto a ball he shouldn't have got to and put the visitors ahead.

Once again within two minutes luckless Welling were denied by the woodwork as Loui Fazakerley got in behind the cumbersome Grant Cooper but his left-foot shot came back off the near post.

Welling rallied in stoppage-time with Fazakerley and Dorian Smith going close before Stortford got a third on the break through Danny Harris after the Wings committed virtually everyone, including Masters, forward for a late corner.

Meanwhile, Bromley edged a pulsating nine-goal thriller at St Albans.

Mark Goldberg's side got their first win in four games with a 5-4 success.

The Lillywhites were 3-0 up after 31 minutes after goals from Ryan Hall, Warren McBean and Adrian Stone - but St Albans came storming back and were level by the 72nd minute after a hat-trick of headers from defender Ben Martin.

McBean restored Bromley's lead with 16 minutes to play and Luke I'Anson gave them some breathing space in the 85th minute, which they needed after Danny Charge headed another goal back for the hosts.
