CLAIMS of racism towards Gillingham goalkeeeper Jason Brown marred the end of Saturday’s match at Chesterfield.

The allegations follow a confrontation between Brown and the home supporters at the final whistle, with the Welshman being escorted away by stewards.

Chesterfield manager Roy McFarland’s attempts at calming down the the situation led Gills boss Ronnie Jepson to compliment his opposite number.

Jepson said: “Roy came into our changing room and spoke to Jason about a racist remark which was said to him.

“That’s absolutely superb from Roy to come in straight after the game and speak to Jason. He said, if it happened, he didn’t want that and it’s great that he came and did that.”

Chesterfield assistant manager Lee Richardson expressed his displeasure at the incident and offered his apologies on behalf of the club.

He said: “If there’s been racism then the whole club will apologise to the player concerned and to Gillingham Football Club.

“It’s certainly not what we want to see here.”
