New policy over Gills' injury prone players

ROD WALLACE: two-year contract but rarely played
ROD WALLACE: two-year contract but rarely played

GILLINGHAM have learnt from past mistakes and won’t be offering long-term contracts to players with injury concerns.

This means David Perpetuini’s and Gary Wales’ agents, who are meeting with chairman Paul Scally in the next week, will have to work hard to put together deals that both parties find acceptable.

Player-manager Andy Hessenthaler said: “We have learnt a lot in the past few years. Rod Wallace, for example, was given a two-year deal and hardly played a game.”

Perpetuini, 24, who missed the second half of the season after a snapping his cruciate ligament, is back in training, while Wales, 25, has had an operation on his knee.

Hessenthaler added: “It may be a case of offering Perpetuini a week-to-week deal, something short term so we can keep him here.

“We will have to see how the injury goes, but if he does well, gets in the team regularly then we will re-negotiate his deal.”

Wales, who made his debut against West Ham on March 27, played three games, missed the following three because of his knee, then played a part in the final three games of the season, scoring in the defeat against Coventry.

Hessenthaler said: “Maybe we will get him back pre-season because we still have not seen enough of him. He has done well the few times he’s played but we must give ourselves more time and wait and see how he does.”
