Charlton manager Alan Pardew has warned that on-loan players Marcus Bent and Amdy Faye could return to The Valley “demotivated” if Wigan and Glasgow Rangers fail to buy them in the summer.

Bent was signed by former Wigan manager Chris Hutchings last summer and established himself in the side.

But since Steve Bruce took charge, the striker has found himself on the periphery of the first team.

Pardew disclosed for the first time that Bent, who is among Charlton’s highest paid players, had expected Wigan to secure him in January transfer window.

“I think Marcus deserved that for what he had done up until that period,” said Pardew. “That deal never materialised, which leaves him in a difficult position.

“If Wigan don’t take him permanently - and one of the reasons we loaned him to the club was because they indicated they wanted to keep him - he could come back to this club demotivated.

“It’s a scenario that would pose a big problem and one which I’m not happy about. If he returns I’ll sit down and talk about next season.

“Whether I’ll be in a financial position to keep him remains to be seen.”

Asked if the sale of Bent would have created room for manoeuvre on his budget to keep former skipper Andy Reid, Pardew retorted: “Maybe.”

Pardew confirmed the club faced a similar situation over the future of Faye, who had endured a miserable time at The Valley following his £2 million move from Newcastle in August, 2006.

His loan with Glasgow Rangers ends next month.

“The situation with Amdy Faye is the same and again is one that is not evolving well for us,” Pardew added. “He’s not playing either so it’s very difficult to monitor.

“I’ve hardly had any contact with Amdy Faye. So if nothing happens, he’ll be coming back.

“Again that will come down to a tough financial call for this club.”

Meanwhile, Charlton have confirmed that Harry Arter, their outstanding young midfielder, will not play again this season.

The 18-year-old from West Malling, who is the brother-in-law of West Ham midfielder Scott Parker, has sustained an Achilles injury which prevented him going out on loan.
