MANAGER Alan Pardew had to settle for a draw from his 50th match in charge as Charlton were held 1-1 by Championship promotion rivals West Bromwich Albion in Saturday's FA Cup third round tie at The Valley.

Charlton were given the tonic of a 52 second lead thanks to midfielder Zheng Zhi but were pegged back by Albion's equaliser which came against the run of play.

"We let ourselves down on New Year's Day against Colchester when we weren't sound as a team," said Pardew.

"We corrected that and I thought we looked really good with plenty of excellent individual performances.

"There was a lot of pace in the side and we played the kind of football Charlton fans want to see. It was just a shame there wasn't a bigger crowd to see a much-improved performance."

China captain Zheng took his chance superbly for his seventh goal of the season when he turned sharply to score after Izale McLeod headed the ball down.

Charlton dominated the half but were stunned when Albion's Ishmael Miller equalised with only their second serious attack in the 34th minute when he headed in Chris Brunt's cross.

Charlton continued to look the better side in the second half but they were repeatedly foiled by former crowd favourite Dean Kiely in the Albion goal.

The replay at the Hawthorns will be on Tuesday, January 15.
