Salisbury v Welling
FRUSTRATED Welling manager Adrian Pennock has warned his topsy-turvy squad that no-one’s place is guaranteed.
Welling’s 2-1 defeat at bottom side Farnborough on Bank Holiday Monday left Pennock furious – and he refused to defend his players for their lack of desire and spirit.
"I keep repeating myself but it was an awful performance defensively," said Pennock, who has seen his side concede a dozen goals in the first six games of the season.
"We’re too nice. We need a nasty streak. I don’t mean going around elbowing people but we need to have leaders at the back.
"The changes will be imminent. If I can do deals early then I will to bring people in."
As a former Football League defender of more than 300 matches, Pennock is finding the current manner of Welling conceding soft goals particularly hard to take.
"It frustrates me so much," he added. "We spent so long working on defending in pre-season but I’m not pointing fingers at just the defenders – we all need to improve our defending."
Pennock’s frustrations boiled over during last Saturday’s 5-1 win over Yeading, and led to an on-pitch bust-up with centre-half pairing John Guest and Steve Perkins.
He said: "I had Guesty by the scruff of the neck because that was what I wanted him to do.
"The Perkins dust-up happens all over the country, people won’t dictate to me. We had a chat and I thought his performance was better against Farnborough."
Welling travel to Salisbury this Friday night. Martin Carthy has returned to the club while Che Stadhart (calf) remains doubtful.
