Alfie Plant coped best in difficult conditions to clinch the Kent Amateur title.
The Rochester & Cobham golfer saw off the challenge from 72 of the county’s top amateurs at Bearsted Golf Club.
Last Friday’s event was the premier amateur tournament of the Kent Golf Union.
The event consisted of four rounds of strokeplay, with the field being cut after two on the Friday. A further 36 holes were played by 34 golfers on Saturday.
Conditions on Friday were tough, after heavy overnight rain, with high blustery winds making Plant’s first round score of 70, one under par, all the more impressive.
The wind blew even harder for the afternoon round and the greens began to dry out but Plant still carded a second round 73 – 143 for the day to keep the lead.
The cut came at a staggering 18 over par for the two rounds, illustrating just how difficult the conditions were.
Conditions remained difficult on Saturday but Plant resumed where he left off. He recorded a further 151 for the two rounds and 294 – 10 over par for the tournament – to win by three strokes from Dartford’s Michael Saunders.
Plant will now represent Kent in the English County Champion of Champions tournament at Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, in September.
Before that, he competes in next week’s 118th Amateur Championships at the Royal Cinque Ports GC and Prince’s GC in Deal.
