WELLING'S play-off chances are all but over after they failed to beat in form Newport County at Park View Road on Saturday.

The Wings got off to the worst possible start when Lee Gledhill failed to clear on 15 minutes and Jason Bowen drilled the ball past Jamie Turner.

Welling responded and were on level terms seven minutes later. Jamie Day's cute pass set up Martin Carthy who beat goalkeeper Tony Pennock.

Carthy then headed wide a precise Danny Kedwell cross and John Guest's header from a Day corner was cleared off the line by Ashley Williams.

Welling lost their way after the break and Newport substitute Sam O'Sullivan was central to all off the visitors' attacks.

He gave Leon Solomon a torrid time down the right wing but on three occasions failed to force Turner into a save.

Che Stadhart had Welling's best chance with 12 minutes left when he beat the off-side trap but his right-foot shot was well saved by Pennock.

The game exploded into life in the 89th minute when Barry Ashby diverted a right-wing cross away for a corner.

The assistant referee flagged for a penalty, claiming Ashby had handled the cross, but after a discussion with referee he still awarded Newport a corner.

Four minutes into stoppage time the Wings were reduced to 10 men when Kedwell saw red after a goalmouth punch up. However, with many punches thrown Wings fans were left wondering how referee B Knight only showed one red card.
