GILLINGHAM defender Adrian Pennock has had to call time on his long fight against injuries and announced his retirement from full-time football.
Pennock, who repeatedly defied medical advice and played on despite a series of career threatening injuries, reluctantly took the decision on learning that he risked serious problems by playing on.
He said: "This has been the toughest decision of my life because I love the club so much. I've had 11 operations and there are no cruciates remaining in my left knee."
He added: "A specialist at the club has advised me to retire and I have taken that advice. I want to stay in the game and might try playing non-league football. What is certain is that I want to get coaching badges, which will help me in the long term."
Playing tribute to Pennock, club chairman Paul Scally said: "He's had six outstanding years with us and two trips to Wembley.
"He's been the life and soul of the club and everyone loves him. We now intend giving him a testimonial match and a dinner to reward him."
