GILLINGHAM are giving a trial to young striker Daniel Webb in the hope of reviving his once bright career prospects.

The 19-year-old son of former Chelsea skipper David Webb arrived at Priestfield on the recommendation of ex-manager Peter Taylor who has been influential in his career since signing him to Southend’s School of Excellence.

Last season Southend loaned him to Brighton & Hove Albion with a view to a £25,000 move. Webb responded with one goal in 12 games in helping the Seagulls win the Division 2 title.

When Taylor quit as Brighton boss at the end of last season, Webb returned to Southend but refused to sign a new contract and has not played this season.

More recently he has been training with Peterborough where Taylor has been assisting manager Barry Fry with coaching. Webb had been hoping to sign for Peterborough on loan but suddenly turned up for training with Gillingham last week.

Because of his age, he is too young to claim a Bosman free transfer, though his father has tried and failed to buy out his contract.

Southend owner Ron Martin is believed to want £10,000 for Webb - the same amount as it cost to buy him out of Southampton’s youth academy.

With player-manager Andy Hessenthaler missing three players through suspension, including himself, for Sunday's match at Crystal Palace - and this on top of a growing injury list - Webb could be signed on loan to ease what is fast becoming a crisis.
