The class of 2013 is in pretty good shape judging by the results achieved at the Kent Schools Athletics Track and Field Championships at Ashford on Saturday, writes Alan Newman.
There were 13 new championship best performances and more than 60 English Schools and elite standard National Schools' marks were recorded.
Year 7 pupils do not compete in the English Schools Championships but that did not stop Medway’s Isaac Milham showing promise with a brace of record times in the 100m (12.48) and 200m (25.84) finals. Kathleen Faes (Sevenoaks and Tonbridge) added a new mark in the girls 1500m (5:00.71).
In the junior boys’ events, there were new records for Cameron Lyttle (Bexley) in the 100m (11.05) and 200m (22.76) and James Whiteaker (Sevenoaks and Tonbridge) with 58.51 meters in the javelin.
The junior girls were also in record-breaking form, with Sabrina Sinha (West Kent) taking the 1500m final by 11 seconds in 4:33.16.
Tommy Ramdhan (Bexley) set new championship bests in the intermediate boys’ 100m with 10.77 seconds in the heats, improving in the final to 10.74 to defeat Maidstone’s Michael Watson (11.23).
Ben Matthews (Bexley) set a new record in the 1500m steeplechase (4:45.12) in an excitingly close finish with Euan Nicholls (Ashford, 4:45.27).
Shannon Hylton (West Kent, 24.00) revised the intermediate girls’ 200m mark and Cheriece Hylton (West Kent) took the 300m record to 39.24 in her final.
Ellie Gooding (Shepway) soared over 3.55 metres in the pole vault for new figures.
