GILLINGHAM'S problem pitch is again under fire after Saturday's match with Wimbledon was postponed owing to waterlogging at the Rainham End.

It was the only senior league fixture in England and Scotland to fall victim of the weather.Earlier in the season, player-manager Andy Hessenthaler called for the pitch to be dug up and re-surfaced. Those calls are now certain to intensify.

Match referee Richard Beeby from Northampton took the decision to call off the match at 10 on the morning of the match because of surface water in two corners of the pitch at the Rainham End.

Gillingham skipper Paul Smith said: "All the players are disappointed because we're enjoying a purple patch right now. When you're going well you want to carry on playing. You don't want interruptions.

"Had we taken three points against Wimbledon we would have moved further up the table."

Many Gills fans were already in their way to the game when they heard the news from others returning home.
