Mark Stimson cannot prevent Gillingham first team coach Mark Robson from filling the vacant managerial post at Colchester United.
Robson joined the Gillingham coaching staff in August after leaving Championship side Charlton Athletic in the summer.
Kit Symons is in temporary charge at the Weston Homes Community Stadium after the League 1 club parted company with manager Geraint Williams.
Robson has expressed an interest in the job and would be free to leave if he was offered the post.
Stimson said: "Mark is not on a contract. It suits both parties and if he was to get the Colchester job I'd be the first person to ring him up and say congratulations.
"If he was to leave us it would be a blow because since he's been here I'm sure the players have enjoyed what he's put on.
"But I've known from the start that Mark's stay here could be a week, a month or three months. We have just got to get the most out of him while he is here."
