SIMON ROYCE won Medway Messenger’s September player of the month award.

The award, sponsored by Rochester-based Sweet Property Services, is voted for by Gillingham fans and based on players’ performances each month.

Royce won the most votes for September in a mixed month for the Gills, which started with a 2-1 home win against Walsall, and ended with a well-earned draw at home to Leeds.

There were also heavy defeats to Southend (3-0) and Nottingham Forest (4-0) but the Gills fans recognised Royce’s contribution during that difficult spell.
