VISITORS Wawickshire dominated the first session of a blustery, yet mercifully dry day at Worsley Bridge Road going into lunch on 97 without loss.

After winning their seventh toss in nine starts, Warwickshire sent in Michael Powell and Mark Waugh to face the wind-assisted pace of Mohammad Sami and Martin Saggers.

Kent used six bowlers in the first session without hint of a breakthough as Powell and Wagh batted through without alarm.

The game seems likely to mark Sami’s final championship game of the season for Kent.

He sent down nine overs in the session from the Crystal Palace End, including 11 no balls, and also receoved a ticking off from umpire Peter Willey for running on the pitch.

The young Pakistan paceman is being forced to fly home on Monday after receiving a summons back to Karachi from Pakistan’s new national team coach and former Kent player, Bob Woolmer.

The dictate from Woolmer with just a week’s notice means that the five English counties with Pakistan overseas players, Kent included, are now involved in a frantic bidding war for new international stars.

Kent’s chief executive Paul Millman has confirmed the county are looking to bring in a star all-rounder in time to play in the Twenty20 Cup starting on July 2.

But, with so many clubs in the running for a limited number of quality players, he is understandably reticent to name names.
