Saunders ponders fresh offer to stay at Priestfield

TRANSFER-LISTED Gillingham midfielder Mark Saunders is considering the club's offer of a new two-year contract. Saunders, who asked for a move in January, was ready to leave Priestfield on a Bosman free at the season's end when his existing agreement expires.

Former club Plymouth are rumoured to be interested in taking him back to Home Park but the player, who was married in the summer, has always expressed a preference to stay after putting down roots in the Ashford area.

Having remained on the fringe of the first team all season, he made a rare first team appearance last Saturday as a substitute against Bradford City, but was back on the bench at Rotherham on Tuesday.

"The club have offered me a two-year deal which I'm considering," was all he would say.

Saunders, with his combative style, is a big favourite with Gillingham supporters who would like him to be given an extended run in the side.

Meanwhile, defender Mark Patterson is cursing the injury jinx that forced him out of Tuesday's side after pulling a hamstring in the warm-up. Gillingham had to ask Rotherham's permission to change the side as they had already handed in their team sheet. Had Rotherham declined the request they would have been forced into using one of their substitutes from the start.

Nyron Nosworthy was recalled and is now certain to keep his place against Wolves on Saturday at Molineux.
