Gills chairman Paul Scally is fully behind moves to oust Football League chairman Greg Clarke.
Mr Scally is in the Algarve over the next two days for the annual Chairmans’ Conference.
Representatives from all 72 clubs will converge on Vilamoura to discuss a number of issues. And the main talking point will be whether Mr Clarke is the right man to be heading the Football League.
Mr Scally’s resolution was for a vote of no confidence for the whole board. That was rejected by other clubs but there is plenty of support for the removal of Mr Clarke.
“This will be a serious meeting and there are a lot of issues,” said the club chairman.
“There are concerns about the chairman and whether the clubs are supporting him.
“I support the vote of no confidence. My resolution was for a vote of no confidence for the whole board. I think the whole board are responsible, not just one man. That wasn’t accepted by the other clubs and they preferred the vote of no confidence for just him, which I support also.”
The main criticism of Mr Clarke has been in his negotiations with the Premier League over solidarity payments for clubs in the lower leagues and that the Football League are without a main sponsor.
Mr Scally said: “I think solidarity negotiations have been poor and I think there are different agendas that he has failed to address. I don’t think he has led the Football League into new pastures.
“We don’t even have a league sponsor at the moment. I think that’s a scandal and it should have been done a year ago, maybe two years ago. I don’t think he has led the league particularly well, those are my issues.
“There is quite a lack of support for him. We will see what happens and the next couple of days are going to be quite interesting.”
The Football League were expected to sign a three-year deal with DIY chain B&Q in a £21m contract, replacing npower as sponsors, but talks broke down.
