BRITAIN took on some of Europe's top sports players when Strokes Adventure Golf course at Margate was the venue for the 10th British Minigolf Open.

More than 50 players took on the challenge of the tricky 18-hole course at Westbrook Parade, with £500 and the British Open trophy the top prize.

Kent's team and players from across the UK fought hard to keep the title in Britain but it was eventually a Scandinavian trio who claimed the prizes in Sunday's final.

Finnnish player Jouni Valkjarvi took the tournament title with Sweden's Mattias Stahl and Eiriak Seljelid in second and third place.

Ramsgate player Tim Witherden kept British pride alive by taking the title of Best Novice Player in the tournament.

Competition organiser Sean Homer said: "It is the first time the British Open has come to Kent and it's been a terrific success.

"All the players have really enjoyed themselves, praising the course and the very warm welcome Margate has given them."

Strokes' owner Brian Woods said: "There has been a buzz about the whole weekend and hopefully we have shown people just how much fun minigolf can be."

The Margate course is now preparing for its second major competition of the year. The course hosts the Kent Open on November 4.
